Solutions
Hearing loss has become a large problem across the country today and not just with elderly people, where hearing loss is a natural development due to aging. There are methods and therapies available today for helping with hearing loss and helping to improve hearing.
Hearing Aids
A hearing aid is one of the most popular devices available today for people with hearing loss. Hearing aids do just that; aid people in their hearing capabilities. Hearing aids magnify the sounds around people with hearing problems to a point where they can hear and understand those sounds better than without an aid. Hearing aids are available in different ranges for people with different levels of hearing loss. If a person is at the onset of hearing loss they will only need a hearing aid that helps with low pitched sounds where a person with chronic hearing loss will need a hearing aid that helps with high pitched sounds.
Syringing
Syringing is a process available in the United States today that helps with hearing problems. One cause of hearing loss or problems with hearing is excessive buildup of wax in the ear. Cleaning the ear with a Q-tip each day after taking a shower is one way to remove wax from the ear but it can buildup over time without proper hygiene care. Syringing is the process of removing wax from the ear with a syringe by either removing wax from the ear or by injected fluid into the ear that will breakup the wax, loosen it and then make it easier to remove.
Stapedectomy
A stapedectomy is a surgical procedure used to improve hearing. It is performed on the middle of the ear and is usually only done for people that cannot hear even with the use of hearing aids. The process involves the removal of the stapes bone and the insertion of a micro prosthesis, the stapedectomy, to create a small hole. The results of this surgery are usually very successful. Doctors estimate that close to nine out of every ten patients that have the stapedectomy performed will have their hearing improved significantly.
Remove the Cholesteatoma
A cholesteatoma is an unnatural growth of benign skin in the ear that can lead to hearing loss and the development of excess fluid in the ear. It usually grows in the middle of the ear and can be removed to improve hearing. The cholesteatoma can be formed as a result of trauma to the ear, some patients are born with skin that can be trapped in the middle ear and the final way for cholesteatoma to develop is from having an improperly functioning Eustachian tube. The final method is the most common way for cholesteatoma to develop. Surgery can be performed to remove the cholesteatoma to improve hearing. There is the possibility that the entire cholesteatoma may not be able to be removed which could lead to re-growth and another procedure. The surgery is performed through the ear canal or with an incision behind the ear with periodic cleaning of the mastoid cavity every 3-6 months to prevent infection.
